Reporting to the Director of Marketing of The Datai Langkawi, and with a dotted line to the Director of Marketing Consultant of Datai Hotels and Resorts, the Visual Storyteller will elevate the sustainability initiatives of The Datai Pledge through impactful, solutions-led storytelling. This position will work on a wide range of communications that are designed to engage and inspire international audiences, showcasing the meaningful impact of The Datai Pledge through creating evocative cutting-edge content.
In its first year, this role will be mentored by leading international sustainability editor Juliet Kinsman. It offers an exciting opportunity to sharpen skills in short-form, and be a master of generating scroll-worthy storytelling while staying at the forefront of the latest social media trends. The role will action editorial rigour and help The Datai Pledge hone a new voice in sustainability and luxury travel communication.
Content Creation and Storytelling
- The candidate will be guided and supported to be able to lead the creation of purpose-driven content that is aligned with The Datai Pledge’s vision, for social media channels, website, newsletters, reports, and more, as well as print publications such as brochures, books and more, with a focus on elevating visual storytelling.
- Support local empowerment initiatives by working with local artists to merge art and nature, telling impactful stories creatively under The Datai Pledge.
- Produce and edit high-quality content (including write-ups, photography and videography) in a way that informs and entertains (‘edutaining’), showcasing the impact of The Datai Pledge.
- Develop deeper, documentary-style content, in the form of long-term, high-quality storytelling that caters to different audiences and requires time and effort for meaningful impact.
- Bring a journalistic mindset to storytelling, crafting compelling narratives backed by facts and solutions.
Digital Content Management
- Manage and upload content to digital platforms, ensuring accuracy and seamless execution, aiming to grow the right audience.
- Source, design, and manage imagery, video, and other multimedia assets as well as build and oversee a comprehensive library of content, in collaboration with professional photographers and the property team, ensuring the necessary tools are available.
- Analyse and report on social media performance metrics.
Social Media Leadership
- Create innovative, engaging, and results-driven content aligned with the latest social media trends while raising awareness of environmental and social issues.
- Maintain a keen intuition for what resonates with luxury travel audiences across platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and emerging networks.
- Develop strategies to maximise reach, engagement, and impact, marrying creativity with data-driven insights.
- Liaise with the property social media team to create collaborative social media posts and connect the audience of the different channels.
Collaborative Marketing Support
- Work alongside the marketing and PR teams to ensure content aligns with broader brand goals.
- Assist in planning and documenting special events such as Earth Day, World Ocean’s Day, but also Beach Clean-ups, NGO Visits, and more, for social media and outreach purposes.
- Build partnerships to amplify reach, and position The Datai Langkawi as a leader in sustainable travel communication.
The ideal candidate will be a rare mix of creativity, digital savvy, with enthusiasm for sustainability and conservation, and strong organisational skills as well as a passion for storytelling in the English language.
1. Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication or other media field, with 2-5 years’ experience in hospitality or sustainability-based organisations.
2. Ability to distil complex sustainability concepts into accessible, engaging narratives.
3. Proven track record in creating high-quality social media content which shows candidate’s ability to tell impactful stories through words and images.
4. Experience in producing short-form videos optimised for social media.
5. A grasp of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and digital marketing basics.
6. Familiarity with the latest digital and social media trends, with the foresight to anticipate what’s next.
7. Solid experience with social media including blogs, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tik Tok, and new forms of social media, including how to read ROI and extract analytics.
8. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
9. Able to work independently.
10. Fluent in Business English, both written and oral. Knowledge of and fluency in Malay is essential.
11. Knowledge of other languages, both written and oral is an advantage.
12. Proficiency in all MS Office Programs.
13. Proficiency in basic design software, such as Canva.
14. Detail oriented and able to follow brand guidelines.
