We are seeking a highly skilled Learning and Development Specialist to assess, design, implement, and evaluate initiatives that enhance employee skills and performance. This role involves collaborating with stakeholders, analyzing training needs, and aligning programs with organizational goals. What will you be doing?
Learning Strategy and Planning
Support the creation and execution of Smith & Nephew’s professional learning and development strategy, ensuring programmes and interventions build capability at all levels in line with our growth strategy and culture.
Implement targeted learning strategies and initiatives that align with organizational goals and foster a culture of continuous learning.
Apply best-practice methodologies and innovative learning approaches to deliver world-class professional development solutions.
Keep abreast of industry trends and emerging learning technologies to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of learning solutions.
Contribute to broader HR, Talent, and Future of Work initiatives to ensure learning supports long-term workforce strategies.
Professional Learning & Programmes, Sourcing and Delivery
Design, develop, and deliver impactful learning solutions, including instructor-led training, workshops, and digital learning materials.
Conduct thorough needs assessments to identify and prioritize organizational training and development requirements.
Collaborate with subject matter experts, instructional designers, and vendors to create engaging, interactive, and effective learning experiences.
Provide expert guidance to stakeholders on learning best practices, trends, and innovative approaches to capability building.
Learning Performance, Governance and Metrics
Measure programme effectiveness using assessments, surveys, evaluations, and performance metrics to drive evidence-based improvements.
Oversee budgets, resources, and timelines to ensure the successful and efficient delivery of learning projects.
Maximize return on investment by assessing the impact of each learning initiative and refining future programmes accordingly.
Proactively engage with the business and learners to identify opportunities for improvement and implement change where needed.
Relationship Management
Partner with leaders, HR, and Centres of Excellence to understand business needs and ensure learning initiatives are fit for purpose and deliver measurable outcomes.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to align learning roadmaps with strategic objectives.
Act as a champion of customer focus, gathering feedback from employees, partners, and stakeholders, and translating insights into continuous improvement actions.
Support talent management, leadership development, and succession planning in collaboration with HR and other departments.
Ensure learning and development initiatives are integrated seamlessly with other HR processes and business priorities.
What will you need to be successful?
This global role requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Human Resources, or a related field, with membership in a professional HR or Learning body. Candidates must bring proven experience as a Learning and Development Specialist or in a similar role, ideally in a corporate setting, with strong expertise in adult learning principles, instructional design, and evaluation models. Proficiency in delivering varied learning interventions, managing multiple projects, and working with LMS and learning technologies is essential, alongside relevant certifications in L&D or instructional design.
The role demands strong analytical skills for learning performance analysis, business acumen to translate strategy into actionable learning solutions, and excellent communication to engage diverse stakeholders, including senior leaders. The ideal candidate will be customer-focused, collaborative, and adaptable, with the ability to lead project teams, foster trust, and build effective cross-functional relationships while staying abreast of emerging L&D trends.
Success in this position requires initiative, problem-solving skills, and a proven track record of delivering on commitments. The candidate must be able to influence and persuade stakeholders, manage across the matrix, and apply critical thinking to develop innovative solutions that enhance learning impact. Travel is minimal (under 20%), and the position offers opportunities to shape and align learning strategies with business goals globally.
