Intern - Metrology

This role is part of the Intern Program and aims to attract high-performing undergraduate students pursuing a degree in mechanical, industrial, manufacturing engineering, physics, or related fields. Interns will work on meaningful projects that contribute to Smith+Nephew’s growth while gaining valuable industry experience. The program also includes team-building activities and social events, offering students exposure to the medical device industry and potential future career opportunities.
What will you be doing?
This internship role involves working closely with managers to complete assigned engineering projects, preparing study plans and reports, and presenting findings to senior leadership. Responsibilities include revising procedures, work instructions, and forms, as well as executing engineering studies, measurement system analyses, statistical evaluations, and performing calibration or verification tasks.
What will you need to be successful?
Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited university, pursuing an undergraduate degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering, physics, or a related discipline. A strong academic record is expected, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, advanced Excel functions, and statistical tools like Minitab or JMP. Familiarity with measuring equipment such as CMM, profile projectors, and surface profilometers is considered an added advantage.
Key proficiencies for this role include significant attention to detail, analytical and statistical skills (e.g., Gage R&R, SPC, capability studies), and the ability to tackle problems using methods such as 8D and Fishbone analysis. The candidate should be capable of interpreting technical drawings and applying GD&T standards. Excellent communication skills are essential for cross-functional teamwork and report writing. A high level of learning agility and the ability to analyze and synthesize data optimally will also be important for success in this role.
