We are currently hiring a Treaty Underwriter to join the P&C Treaty team in Malaysian Branch. This role is to underwrite existing and new business under the area of responsibility, and ensure underwriting efficiency. In addition, to deliver excellent customer service, identify new business opportunities in the markets, developing business relationship with our clients for Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and South Asia markets.
This role reports to the Team Manager - Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and South Asia.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting and Risk Management
- Conduct comprehensive technical risk assessments and approval of both traditional and non-traditional reinsurance products. Calculate premiums and define reinsurance conditions using underwriting tools and models, ensuring decisions align with authority limits and profitability goals.
- Solid understanding of contract wording, review, challenge and adjust policy clauses based on business needs and market insight to add value.
- Negotiates rates and terms with distributors and clients, optimizing for both client needs and business goals.
- Stay informed on client needs, industry trends, regulations and best practices to refine underwriting strategy.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant Group reputation and country/ risk guidance and processes (Code of Conduct, Underwriting Guidelines, etc.)
- Be a Business Management ambassador and serve as both enabler and enforcer, as needed. Actively engage and influence client markets and various cross-functional teams to recommend and support client strategies.
Business Development
- Cultivate and expand a sustainable portfolio by developing strong relationships with clients and brokers across regions.
- Maintain a high profile within the underwriting community to gain market insights and influence industry practices. Develop and execute sales plans, leveraging market knowledge to identify new business opportunities and increase penetration with existing clients.
- Ensure that all quotations and rates are within management guidelines and have proper approvals.
Data/ Knowledge Base Contribution
- Leverage existing and new data sources to provide underwriting value. Identify knowledge gaps and address them through quantitative and qualitative research, transforming insights into actionable, client-focused plans.
- Coordinate with clients to define data requirements for each contract, ensuring compliance with internal data standards. Maintain data integrity in systems, adhering to underwriting guidelines, limits, and pricing procedures.
- Develop the strategic plans for their line of business, territory and ensure integration of these plans into improved annual results, forecast and budget process.
Job Requirements
- University degree in any discipline
- Professional Certificates in Insurance is an advantage
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in insurance/reinsurance
- Have a knowledge of responsible markets. Understanding of broker industry.
- Experience to work in a broker company would be an advantage
- Working experience in local country in South East Asia & South Asia region is a plus
- Detail oriented, strong analytical, critical and conceptual thinking
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously with a self-starting, pro-active approach.
- Ability to adapt to changes in organization.
- Ability to handle the huge workload in a peak renewal season in an efficient manner.
- Problem-solving skills and a logical approach to work
- Good in contract wording construction & interpretation
- Ability to manage and optimize their portfolio of clients.
- Ability to work both in a team and independently whenever the situation requires.
