Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Manager to lead our Sustainable Energy and Low Carbon sub-unit. The ideal candidate will be a strategic and technical expert who will spearhead our journey towards achieving our Net Zero ambitions.
This role is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategies to reduce our carbon footprint across all operations. You will be the primary custodian of our GHG emissions data (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) and will lead a dedicated team to drive energy efficiency, promote green building practices, and manage carbon accounting. With a strong background in asset/facility management and real estate, you will work collaboratively with our operations teams to embed sustainability into our core business practices, solve complex challenges, and champion a culture of environmental stewardship throughout the organization.
Job Purpose
- To assist the general manager (Sustainability) in leading and managing the carbon management team in developing a programme that will reduce the Group's energy use, carbon footprint, support Business with decarbonization efforts and expertise, and implement sustainable methods of managing the portfolio of property,
- Responsible for overseeing the energy and carbon performance of the organisation, developing, implementing, and monitoring renewable energy and carbon reduction strategies, policies and programmes that promote carbon management, energy efficiency and sustainable development across integrated assets, townships, industrial, commercial, and retail assets.
- To provide expertise and knowledge of the science, policies, technologies, and environmental interventions associated with climate change including the international context and evidence base for carbon reduction targets. Monitor key changes in legislation and policy and identify any impacts these may have on the council's carbon reduction ambition.
- Collaborate proactively and effectively across service and organizational boundaries and build a strong network of committed stakeholders to deliver the councils carbon reduction targets.
- To actively seek partnerships/network for decarbonization and where possible, enhance leadership through strategic corporate communication activities.
Job Responsibilities
Strategy & Leadership:
- Develop, lead, and execute the company's overarching Net Zero strategy in line with our corporate goals and sustainability strategy and roadmap (SSR2030).
- Lead and mentor a team of sustainability professionals, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
- Set KPIs and track progress against sustainability targets, providing regular reports to senior management.
- Stay abreast of global and local sustainability trends, regulations, and technologies to ensure our strategy remains robust and forward-thinking.
Technical & Operational Management:
- Act as the custodian and subject matter expert for the company's emissions dashboard, ensuring accurate data collection and reporting for Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
- Oversee carbon accounting and reporting activities, ensuring compliance with standards such as the GHG Protocol.
- Drive energy management initiatives across our portfolio, leveraging a technical background in asset or facility management to identify and implement efficiency projects.
- Champion green building certifications (e.g., LEED, BREEAM, Green Mark) for new and existing properties.
- Work strategically with the operations teams to integrate sustainable practices into daily activities, from procurement to facility maintenance.
Stakeholder Engagement & Education:
- Serve as a key liaison between the Sustainability department and business operations, building strong relationships to drive collaborative action.
- Develop and deliver training and awareness programs to educate employees on sustainability, energy conservation, and our Net Zero goals.
- Communicate sustainability performance and initiatives effectively to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Proactively identify and address challenges, acting as a key problem-solver for all issues related to energy and carbon reduction.
Support General Manager in Reporting and Stakeholder Engagement
- Support the GM (Sustainability) in data preparation and reporting of Net Zero progress & biodiversity updates, including in matters pertaining to the Management Sustainability Committee (“MSC”) & Board Sustainability Committee (“BSC”).
- Support General Manager (Sustainability) in the development of strategy, annual management dialogues (“AMD”) presentation deck, Management and Board papers, contribute to the preparation of the annual budget, mid-year review, and other reports relevant to assigned duty/task.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Facility Management, Real Estate, or a related technical field.
Experience: A minimum of 10-15 years of relevant professional experience, with a significant combination of work in the real estate and sustainability sectors.
Technical Expertise:
- Proven experience in asset management or facility management.
- Strong background in carbon accounting and familiarity with Scopes 1, 2, and 3.
- Demonstrable expertise in green building principles and certification processes.
Certifications (Preferred):
- Registered Energy Manager.
- Certified GHG Protocol professional.
- Accreditation in a major green building rating system (e.g., LEED/GBI/GreenRE AP).
- Worked in a sustainability-related position in a corporate company or has been involved in leading/supporting sustainability strategies and initiatives for at least 10 years.
- Experience leading, developing and delivering high-performing projects, teams and complex operations in the Sustainability field.
- Experienced in the development and implementation of a range of energy and carbon management projects, managing specific energy efficiency work programs, and preparing risk assessments in line with agreed targets and plans.
- Successful experiences in the implementation of decarbonization initiatives to support carbon emissions reduction and deliver environmental benefits.
- Demonstrable experience of managing carbon appraisals, audits, surveys, feasibility studies, corporate carbon reporting (energy and carbon metrics), life-cycle assessments, renewable/low carbon technologies
- Experience in carbon accounting, analysis and interpretation of datasets, and use of data visualization tools to enable the reporting of complex information to strategic leaders and decision makers.
- Strategy, policy and procedural development and implementation through deliverable programs, campaigns, and activity
- Procurement and contract management experience, demonstrating strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
