Why does this job exist and why is it critical?
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic legal support and advisory to various business divisions to manage, mitigate, and resolve disputes and litigation matters.
- Oversee the group’s dispute and litigation portfolio, including management of court proceedings, alternative dispute resolution, and authorities’ investigations.
- Act as the main liaison between Maxis’ stakeholders and external counsel, ensuring clear alignment and strategic coordination on litigation and regulatory matters.
- Monitor, assess, and report on material litigation risks to senior management and provide pragmatic recommendations.
- Lead legal efforts in navigating telecom-related regulatory and compliance issues, including those involving cybersecurity, anti-bribery, anti-corruption, and data protection laws.
- Support Maxis’ initiatives by ensuring regulatory compliance and legally sound execution.
- Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents relating to disputes, settlements, and compliance matters.
- Balance legal issues against commercial requirements in the performance of assigned duties and tasks. Rendering pragmatic legal advice while ensuring legal compliance and Maxis’ interests are protected
- Stay abreast of industry developments and legal reforms impacting the telco and digital infrastructure landscape.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 7 years post-qualification experience (PQE), preferably with a balanced combination of private practice (litigation) and in-house legal roles.
- Strong litigation background with proven experience in civil and commercial disputes; experience in cybersecurity and date protection is advantageous.
- In-depth understanding of regulatory frameworks governing the telecommunications sector in Malaysia.
- Experience interfacing with regulatory authorities (e.g. MCMC) and handling authorities’ investigations and enforcement actions.
- Ability to blend legal expertise with commercial acumen, delivering solutions that are compliant yet practical.
- Demonstrate critical and analytical thinking with good problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication, inter-personal and negotiation skills.
- A proactive team player who thrives in fast-paced, challenging environments.
